How much does fault finding cost?

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?
Most often it is a faulty appliance, damp in an outside light or a damaged cable. We test circuit by circuit to find which one it is, rather than guess. The switch that trips (the RCD) is doing its job.
Half my sockets have stopped working. Is that serious?
